When I got it, I startled a little bit because for the past 8 years I’ve been living here, there hasn’t a day that passed by that I wasn’t homesick. Some days were harder than others, but I have find a way to survive away from home. I’m always working. Sometimes, I overwork so that I don’t stay home crying or looking at the family pictures. Also, I have a lot of good friends that, you know, I can always call or spend time with . My family has been helpful and supportive, too.
I lived in Haiti for most of my life, and I was accustomed to a certain and different lifestyle . No matter how many times people would remind me that I am not fully Haitian because I was born in the US, still I don’t know anywhere else as HOME than “Port-de-Paix” ( a little town in the northwest side of Haiti) . I even call it my “safe haven” because living there brought me such great peace .
We all have dreams and things that we want to accomplish. We usually do things not because we want to but because we have to. So, let me say this to anyone who no longer lives at home and suffer from separation or anxiety: you should find a good community where you can feel safe away from home.
(Quotes from Google )
To not give in on packing & move back home, forever , I made good friends here who are literally like my family; I’ve gotten close to some members of my true family. I also keep myself extremely busy by always findind things to do like cooking dinner for myself (it’s sounds lonely but it’s actually nice to do) and joining a church (if you religious, do so). Between school, church, and work, my schedule is always full. Plus,I spend hours on the phone with my mother . I always keep up with people back home.
All of that doesn’t mean that the pain goes away, it just means that you are copping. For instance, since I’m missing out on 2 of my nieces lives, My babe sister’s, and my godchildren’s, I, sometimes burst out crying when I receive pictures of them. They only know me in pictures . When I go home, I’m a stranger to them .
That fear of losing connection with people or feeling like a stranger to some is the worst.

New York, the state I live in, is not an easy place to live . It’s LOUD ! There’s always something going, people are always moving. If you don’t like to be around people, this can make the copping process harder. Personally, no matter how outgoing I am, some days being around a lot of people can be a bit much and nerve-wracking . Therefore, I make it a point to spend at least one day at home even when I’m extremely BUSY!
To anyone who might be feeling homesick: don’t give up and go back wherever you from . Remind yourself why you are here, on the first place. Keep in mind the goals you have or how gratifying they would feel, in the end. Find you some friends that you can form profound bonds with!
PURPOSE and FAITH, are the things that keep me going. Plus, my support system back home ( Haiti) is always reminding me why I’m here . It’s a journey, but don’t allow fears to make you give up ! We just have to find new ways to make the new place “home”, even though what you’ve known to be home will ALWAYS be that safer place you can go back to when it’s needed.
Stay strong! Believe it or not, there are many people out there who will allow you to lean on them ! Let them be the support system you need. Life is all about overcoming the obstacles that are thrown at you! ❤️
I always feel at ease when I’m home. This picture is a representation of how I feel when I’m in Haiti.
