Pascalin Smith -Paska Music

One day, while I was scrolling down on Instagram, I came across a cover of one of Kai songs “Malad” by Paska.. I admit that, surprisingly, the cover was really good. Then, over the past  year, I saw him growing and getting bigger in the Haitian Music Industry whether it was with his songs’ covers or his own song “Bina Boye.” That last one was a mega hit . I mean everyone was singing it and the video was done tastefully.  Besides being a talented artist, I think Paska’s charisma and outgoing personality are the things that makes him Paska . Going over this interview had me smiling. So, I hope you will enjoy it and get a better grasp of who’s really PASKA
For those who might not know who is Paska, what can you tell them?
Well, my real name is Pascalin Mareck Smith. I’m 22 years old, a young singer, producer, songwriter and performer.I was born in Port-au-Prince but raised in Les cayes. Im just a young passionate artist who is trying to make his name in the music industry ,and represents his cultures (Haiti/Congo) in front of the world.
When did MUSIC become more than a pastime for you?
Since I was a kid, MUSIC has always been a part of my life. However, I was about 16 when I started to take music seriously and created my first group ” P-Boys”.
Paska, you are what I think people call an overnight success. What’s your thoughts on that?
Ha ha ! I wouldn’t say that I’m an overnight success. Let’s just say that my team and I have been working really hard to offer the right product, at the right time and the right way.
You are a young musician who is trying to make it in the Haitian industry. How can you describe the experience so far?
I wouldn’t limit myself to just Haiti; music has no barriers! So far, it’s been a great journey! I’m learning so much from my experiences. It hasn’t been easy since I’m a young artist and I have so much more to prove. Anyway, I live for challenges and each day I’m getting closer to my goals.7CA8302E-87BF-4FAB-8C23-D197A49EBE07

Did you expect your peers and fans to open their arms to you as much as they did?

The love and attention given to me exceeded all my expectations. I have the best fans and l am so grateful for them . Just like im really grateful for my entourage.

You are still young, so how do you manage to not lose the real you in the middle of all this success?

To be honest with you , my family, my team and my close friends are the one keeping me grounded to earth. No matter how famous I could be , I know that they will do all they can to help me remain as humble as possible.

People love to assume and start rumors. Do you have anything you would like to clarify?

Rumors and assumptions will always exist. It’s just a part of life. I’m just grateful for my haters cause they motivate me ;).

What’s one thing you hate about this industry that you would change if  you could?

I would change the lack of togetherness because I believe that together we can accomplish so much and build a sustainable and long lasting industry.

Watching, reading or even listening to people talk, I’ve come to understand that the HMI is a hard one to be part of. What do you know now, you wish you had known then?

Personally, I wouldn’t change a thing , because the path that God have put me on, led me to where and who I am today. But, if I can point out the 2 things that have stucked with me , it would be : timing is important and the fact that you need to surround yourself with the right people.

How would you describe your style, music wise? Who inspired you?

My sound is a mixture of afro and Caribbean-Pop . Consequently, I would consider myself as an Afro-Caribbean-Pop artist. I was a music lover ever since I was a kid. Though, my inspirations come primarily from my mom who has always been my biggest fan.

What do you think differentiate you with other artists? How do you plan on standing out?

I think that being ME is what already sets me apart. My sound + my work ethic= me . I’m planning on standing out by being consistent with my work, always improving my craft and letting myself being influenced by all of the sounds of the world.

BinaBoye was a success, did you expect it to reach so many people?

Not at all!!! Honestly, I wasn’t expecting it to reach as many people in such little time. But I’m very grateful for the fact that binaboye has reached other territories outside of Haiti.

Some think you do too many covers. What do you have to say to that?

Everybody is entitled to their opinions. I’m here to stay. Everything I do , I do it for my fans.

How does it feel to see the artists’ reaction to your covers of their songs?

It’s always a pleasure for me to witness the positive feedbacks coming from those artists, because they genuinely love what I do. It’s an honor for me to use their work and to be able to give those amazing songs another dimension ,and for them to reach another crowd while I’m presenting my creativity to the world.

If you could collaborate with just only 2 artists right now, who would you pick?

It would be Michael Brun and Phyllisia Ross.

Describe your first tour in 2 words.

Unforgettable Experience

If you could do one thing ( outside of music) what would it be and why?

I would and will be an entrepreneur, because my dream was always to be able to create opportunities for others and change people’s life for the better.

You have a pretty big platform, how do you hope to use it to reach more people outside of music?

I would like to use my notoriety to create different aspects of my brand in different fields such as fashion , (example : clothing line , perfume etc…)and  Education. Also, I would like to build a platform for young artists so they could benefit from all the necessary structures in order for them to grow and be able to live from their passion and talent.

If the opportunity presents itself for you to share one thing you’ve learned so far in this industry with someone who looks up to you, what would you say? And why?

My advice would be to always be humble since I’ve learned that Humility is what can make or break you in this industry. It can open so many doors for you that you wouldn’t even imagine. My humility helped me to gain the respect and the credit that I have today. And til’ this day , the most important advice I’ve been receiving from my elders has been to always stay humble.

Your manager, Christian Surena, has his own share of success in the music industry himself. How did this working relationship start?

Most definitely! I can say that it’s been an honor for me to collaborate with such a smart man. Our relationship started with our love for music creation since we both are beatmakers. During the journey, we started to become good friends and partners as we were making moves together and learning from each other.

Out of all the things he ( Christian) has shared with you, what’s one thing that sticks the most with you?

He always told me that his work ethic and determination were his best assets and to make sure that people value and respect you as a person before anything .

If you had the chance to do something positive for Haiti what would it be?

It would be to create a platform for the youth so they could be able to be themselves , learn, grow and live from their passion and creativity. I believe that the youth is the country’s biggest hope.

I spent 13 years myself in Port-de-Paix which is a totally different world compared to PAP. How was it growing up aux Cayes?

It was a great experience. It’s such a small but yet a nice place . Everyone knows everybody. Les Cayes was literally the place where I fell in love with music and I will forever be grateful for that.

What’s something that you used to do growing up and that you miss?

Going to the park with my friends.

Paska is the happiest when?

His stomach is full lol 😁

Are you dating anyone ( I have a matchmaking Agency lol jk )? If no, describe the perfect girl for Paska?

The perfect girl for Paska would be : smart, confident, independent, generous and beautiful. That’s the type of woman that I’m looking for.

If you had a superpower, what would it be ?

I would love to be able to teleport myself anywhere.

A music tour can get lonely and tiresome at times, what do you bring with you to make it “homey”?

I always make sure I have my headphones so I could listen to music, and my Netflix to watch my shows and movies lol.

I wasn’t sure if you are still attending school. If yes, what’s your major?

Yes I am still studying , and my major is in Business management .
